Making Coral By Pouring Molten Aluminum Into a Vat of Orbeez

Have you ever wanted to make coral from scratch but just couldn’t fit 100,000 - 30,000,000 years into your busy schedule?

Well, TikTok’s resident “Science dude” @Joejmyheck may have just the solution for you. On Thursday, May 18, the creator, famed for his metal-pouring clips, took to his platform of 2.8 million followers with a video depicting the strange, reef-like cast that emerges after dumping molten metal into a bucket of Orbeez.

“The orbeez are mostly made of water, so the molten metal goes in there and quickly solidifies,” he explained, before detailing how “the hot liquid aluminum shined like a mirror” upon landing into the vat of orbeez.

Yet, even more fascinating than the process itself, was the finished product.

“As I pulled the metal structure up out of the orbeez, it quickly became apparent that this was something cool. The liquid metal had flowed around each of the little watery spheres and solidified.”

We know what we’re doing this weekend …
