The Meanest Burns of Francis Ford Coppola's Box-Office Dud Megalopolis

Everyone hated Megalopolis. And where do people go to share their takes on a movie they hated? Letterboxd, of course.

Megalopolis hit theaters this last weekend and so, I journeyed over to my local theater with some friends to watch the latest film from Francis Ford Coppola, the man responsible for The Godfather I & II, Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, and many other iconic movies.

I loved it. I found Megalopolis to be a weird, funny, ambitious, messy masterpiece. Were there parts that didn’t totally make sense? Certainly. But the things that worked genuinely moved me and I adored the performances from Adam Driver, who I believe has firmly established himself as the most compelling actor of his generation and he confirmed, and Aubrey Plaza, who matches the film’s sincere tone perfectly.

Apparently, the rest of America did not share my opinion and, in fact, felt the complete opposite. The $120 million Coppola passion project is already proving to be a historic bomb, making just $4 million at the box office (for context, that’s significantly worse than Kevin Costner’s failed passion project performed earlier this year).

But it wasn’t just that no one watched it. The few people who did watch it fucking hated it. And where do people go to share their takes on a movie they hated? Letterboxd, of course. Even though I may not agree with them, I gotta admit, the haters went off on this one. So here are some of my favorite reviews trashing Megalopolis.

Very mild spoiler warning: There are certain light plot points lightly discussed in passing here. But honestly, you could have this entire movie described to you in detail and it still wouldn’t really spoil the viewing experience.
