Video game graphics are constantly improving, nailing details like complicated shadows, textures on trees and buildings, and faces with minuscule wrinkles and imperfections. They’re getting closer and closer to what real life looks like. Except sometimes, real life looks a lot like a simulation.

The Sims is a game that rendered an entire world of uncanny, bright, shadowless suburbs. This gave it a smooth, almost unsettling feel where everything was a little too perfect and sleek. The people who made that were probably just dealing with the limits of the tech at the time, but some photos prove that the real world can be just as lo-fi looking as The Sims. As far as we know, there are not many people walking around speaking Simlish, or hoping their date ends in a Woo-Hoo. Unfortunately, there are people building prison houses without doors, and people using cheat codes to get infinite money.
