Over the weekend, rumors began swirling on social media claiming that officials at BBC News were on standby, awaiting news from the Royal Family. Seemingly stemming from the Pop Apologists pop culture podcast, per Snopes, the internet took this theory and ran, immediately speculating on what, exactly, this announcement could entail. While several suggested that a possible update could entail an advanced illness, a divorce or even reveal that King Charles may abdicate the throne less than a year after his coronation, BBC News has remained largely tight-lipped on the rumors with the exception of food critic Jay Rayner.

“It’s not true. (I checked),” he replied to a Tweet touting the rumor.
